“Absolutely heartbroken to hear about the passing of Sam Pilafian. His ‘Traveling Light’ CD was the very first tuba album I ever owned, and the sound he produced was unlike anything I heard as a teenager. That CD pushed me to become a better musician and still continues to inspire me. His recordings with Empire Brass are still the gold standard for brass chamber music, and I always find inspiration after listening to them. I met him a few times at various conferences and was moved by how humble, nice, and hilarious the man was. Hearing him live was a real treat.

The music world has lost a legend, a mentor, and a friend. Rest In Peace, Mr. Pilafian. It won't be the same without you.

‘Yeah, man.’“
